CITAP welcomed our 2022-23 affiliate cohort this week! We couldn’t be more excited about the talent and diversity of this year’s community, and we’re eager to begin sharing their work.
This year’s affiliates represent institutions spanning the Research Triangle and the globe, ranging from North Carolina Central University to the University of Coimbra (Portugal), Kristiania University College (Norway), University of Johannesburg, and Oxford. They bring expertise in mis- and disinformation, health communication, surveillance, public policy, far-right media ecosystems, and more.
“The best part about CITAP is the interdisciplinarity. The affiliate community brings together faculty, students, alt-ac scholars, and other smart people to think about complex ideas and work on research problems collaboratively,” said CITAP senior researcher Francesca Tripodi “The connective thread between our work is our goal to make a real-world impact, to reach audiences outside the ivory tower.”

Publications and appearances
“The problem of mis- and disinformation in Asian American communities is not just a problem of what constitutes ‘true’ or ‘false’ information, but rather how we understand misleading, manipulative, and deceptive information practices as facilitating political, social, cultural, economic, and material harms in our communities.” As part of the launching of the Asian American Disinformation Table, Rachel Kuo co-authored a landscape report on disinformation in Asian American communities.
“The right to say false things is not absolute.” Affiliate Enrique Armijo appeared on NPR’s Here & Now podcast to talk about Alex Jones’ trial and how the first amendment factors into defamation.
Student affiliate Parker Bach released his very first publication this week! 🎉 Coauthored with Lana Swartz, they discuss the journalistic coverage and shaping of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).
