This was a busy week for CITAP! In case you missed it:
On September 21, UNC held it’s First Amendment Day events including a CITAP panel “Weaponizing First Amendment Rhetoric”. The recording will be shared as soon as it becomes available but, in the meantime, enjoy this tweet featuring Tressie McMillan Cottom.
On September 22, Francesca Tripodi presented the findings of her new book The Propagandists’ Playbook with a Q&A featuring Victor Ray.
When challenges to election integrity leads to violence, conservative elites rely on disinformation encouraging their supporters to see both sides of domestic terrorism.
Watch the full video below. We recommend listening to the Q&A portion featuring Victor Ray.
And today we kicked off our fall 2022 speaker series with a talk from Victor Ray! 🍂🎉
Victor Ray is the F. Wendell Miller Associate Professor in the Departments of Sociology and Criminology and African American Studies at the University of Iowa.
His new book, On Critical Race Theory: Why it Matters & Why You Should Care, explains the centrality of race in American history and politics, and how the oft-maligned CRT is a political necessity.
The notion of interest convergence is often criticized for being overly pessimist because it notes that the racial norm in the US isn’t steady progress but a repressive equilibrium of white dominance. By mischaracterizing critical race theory, conservatives are hoping to ensure interest divergence.
Watch Victor’s full talk below. It’s well worth a watch.
